Turns out, making art with text is a bit much for ChatGPT!
ChatGPT is awesome at answering questions, writing stories, and even helping with homework. But when you ask it to make some simple drawings with text (also known as ASCII art), things get... weird. This post looks at a few times we asked ChatGPT to draw something, and let’s just say, its artistic skills could use some work.
ChatGPT’s Cat (or is it a Mouse?)
First, we asked ChatGPT to draw a mouse. Easy, right? And it did—sort of. Then, we threw in a curveball: "Now, draw a cat!" What did ChatGPT do? It drew the exact same mouse! No difference. It seems like a mouse is just a cat in disguise, according to ChatGPT. It’s like the AI doesn’t really get the whole "animals look different" concept. But hey, at least it tried!
The US Flag (Sort of…)
Next, we asked for the US flag. You know, red, white, and blue, 13 stripes, 50 stars. Sounds simple, right? Well, ChatGPT’s version looked like someone was in a rush. The stripes were all sorts of wonky, the lines weren’t the right width, and the stars... let’s just say there weren’t enough of them. It was a flag, but not the one you’d wave at a parade.
The France Flag (More Like a Mystery Flag)
Next up: the French flag. ChatGPT had a real problem with this one. Instead of the classic blue, white, and red stripes, we got something that looked more like a crime scene. The stripes were all the wrong colors and in the wrong order. Maybe ChatGPT was trying to be avant-garde? Or maybe it just really doesn’t get flags.
Unicorns: A Total Fail
We thought we’d go magical next and asked for a unicorn. What did ChatGPT give us? A bunch of random characters that looked like a confused animal trying to fit in. It had no horn, no grace, no magic—just a mess of text. Maybe unicorns are too much for an AI to handle?
Round Two: Still Not a Unicorn
Undeterred, we tried again. “Draw a unicorn!” we asked. And what did ChatGPT come up with? Well... it was even worse than the first try. If that was a unicorn, we were looking at the world's most disappointed unicorn. It seems that no matter how many times we ask, ChatGPT is just not cut out for fantasy creatures.
So, What’s the Best Thing ChatGPT Can Draw?
We were really starting to doubt its artistic abilities, but we still had one more shot. "What’s the best thing you can draw in ASCII?" we asked. ChatGPT confidently said it could draw a lion. A lion! The king of the jungle! We were excited... until we saw it. What we got looked more like random squiggles and lines—certainly not a lion. It was like ChatGPT had mistaken a lion for a bunch of text characters. Maybe it was a "textual lion," but we didn’t quite see it.
Conclusion
ChatGPT can do a lot of things, but when it comes to drawing in ASCII art, let’s just say it’s not quite Picasso. Whether it's cats, flags, or lions, its attempts are more about creativity than accuracy. While it’s great at generating text and solving problems, creating recognizable pictures with text is a bit out of its league. So, while you can count on ChatGPT for a good conversation or to help you write your next novel, don’t ask it to be your next artist anytime soon!
